Ten University of Maryland sorority members are facing assault and hazing charges after a girl seeking initiation said she was beaten, paddled and choked by the sorority sisters off campus. The victim, whose name was not released by police, withdrew from Zeta Phi Beta sorority in the fall shortly after the incidents, said Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a Prince George's County police spokesman. "The victim was advised that the assaults on her were initiation to be accepted into Zeta Phi Beta," the documents state. Charging documents for the sorority members -- who range in age from 20 to 32 -- detail three incidents. The victim told police that on Oct. 15, she was taken to an unknown address near Annapolis Road and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and pushed into a wall, thrown around the room and punched in the arm repeatedly. The next day, the victim said she was taken to a residence in Bladensburg and paddled. On Oct. 18, she said she was taken to the Adelphi residence of two sorority members where she was again pushed into a wall and hit in the buttocks with an oak paddle. Those facing charges are Montressa Hammond, 24; Zakiya Shivers, 26; Sheila Jackson, 32; Kandyce Jackson, 20; Ayana Langston, 20; Jamece Hackett, 22; Bridget Blount, 24; Tymesha Pendleton, 26; Monika Young, 23; and Amber Bijou, 22. Dave Ottalini, a spokesman for the University of Maryland, confirmed that all defendants are current students or alumni. Rodriguez said the victim reported being hazed to the university, which in turn notified police. In a statement, Matt Supple, the director of the university's fraternity and sorority life, said Maryland's chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, a historically black sorority, was suspended when the school learned of the allegations. Several of the accused sorority members appeared in District Court in Hyattsville on Thursday and were informed of the charges against them. One defendant, Tymesha Pendleton, stood quietly outside the courthouse while her attorney, James Papirmeister, argued that she was innocent of the charges. He said Pendleton, a graduate student, is "devastated" by the charges. "The idea of hazing is abhorrent to her," Papirmeister said. That immediately caught my eye too. Everyone who says that a moratorium should be just for UG's doesn't understand that crazy doesn't always phase out with age.

Apparently the Univ. of MD is doing the most... www.diamondbackonline.com/news/officials-suspend-two-frats-for-hazing-1.2065967Friday, March 4, 2011 Officials Suspend Two Frats for Hazing Univ. vows to increase education, enforcement The university recently suspended two multicultural fraternities — Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Beta Rho — for allegedly hazing their members, and Greek life officials are now ramping up efforts to educate the community on the ramifications of such incidents. The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life suspended Kappa Alpha Psi indefinitely on Feb. 12, pending the results of a joint investigation with the Office of Student Conduct. In addition, this university's chapter of Sigma Beta Rho was closed by its national organization Jan. 20 and is banned from the university for four years or until the last active member graduates, DFSL Director Matt Supple said. Kappa Alpha Psi belongs to the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Sigma Beta Rho was part of the United Greek Council — both serve as the governing bodies of multicultural fraternities and sororities. Kevin Pitts, the adviser to both groups, said DFSL is working with OSC to interview the brothers and pledges of Kappa Alpha Psi, whom he described as "innocent until proven responsible." PHC President Kevin Chambers agreed. "I look at them as though they're innocent," Chambers said. "If it comes out that they are guilty, then we'll deal with it." Supple did not disclose what specific hazing allegations were made against either fraternity. Kappa Alpha Psi chapter President Turner Pride and Sigma Beta Rho's former President Akash Garg could not be reached for comment. Three other fraternities — Pi Kappa Alpha, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Delta Chi — have had their new member activities suspended, as well. "Hazing is a problem across the board, regardless of what the makeup of the organization looks like," Supple said. As of last semester, Kappa Alpha Psi had seven active undergraduate members and Sigma Beta Rho had 20, Supple said. Chambers said hazing allegations make it more difficult for the organizations to recruit because people outside of Greek life don't always see the positive aspects of the organizations. "I think it reflects poorly on the Greek community," Chambers said. "I think people look at the negative versus the positive." All four councils in the Greek system — including the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association — will host an information session March 31 to discuss the problems associated with hazing. And during PHC week, April 17 through 23, the PHC and the UGC will hold an information session about the ramifications of hazing in the media. "We don't condone hazing at all, and the traditions of our organizations are built upon the values of scholarship, brotherhood [and] sisterhood," UGC President Reba Noel said, adding adding Greek life's positive attributes dwarf the incidents of hazing.

ok @ Bun! Surely you got better things to do.
what I don't understand is, if one org. on your campus is being investigated, you may need to lay low cause now they are looking at all Greek orgs on campus, as evident of what is going on at Maryland.
But you 32 at set? I need you to get your priorities together.

It amazes me that every time someone gets caught hazing and is facing charges, they always cry "I'm innocent" and "I abhor hazing". If that were true, you wouldn't be in the middle of the mess.

Dang......it's been a minute since I've posted on here (LOL). Yeah Troopa1911, this is in my home state. The thing that's really bad about this kinda stuff is when the media gets a hold of it. I mean from BMore to DC to Northern Virginia, it's been on the news. <----------- Knows MANY of the Alumni sisters from this chapter, and they are NOT pleased.....

I've attended sets and played the deep background. However, I have quietly whispered in the Deans ear when I felt it was time for a few minute water break, or other little things. Iota has never been sued for hazing, and even though I came in grad, I still feel a responsiblity to ensure things don't get out of hand. My biggest pet peeve is when brothers who are not financial or active for years, come out of the woodwork for sets. You don't have time to put in work, but you make time to put in work. Sad.

Why is everyone completely shocked with the “home alone” face that a 32 year old member of an Org would be present?
So nobody here that pledged undergrad ever had old heads from your chapter come to see you at set?
Even if you went grad and pledged, no one over 29 ever came to see you at set?
For real?
Well, here’s a quick dose of reality. Whether old heads actually participate in set or just observe from the sideline, this is not that odd at all. Really, it’s not. Now, it may not seem prudent in many eyes, but in plenty of undergrad chapters (mine and several I know in and out of my Frat), a Dean and chapter won’t even cross a line until they’ve seen old school in some form or fashion. Yes, some old heads do come and give out work, others will just teach history, and some will just give a line the “eyeball test” to gauge where they’re at. Other old heads will quickly decline to come out altogether. But usually old school will at least be afforded the opportunity, out of respect, to come and get to know the young men that are attempting to pass through their chapter.
That said - I’m not saying that it’s common place for old heads to be “knee deep” involved in a process as in every night. I’m also not saying that an old head with plenty to lose (family, career, public profile, etc) shouldn’t use discernment in what activities they partake in. Those are individual decisions one must make as everyone knows the risks involved. But again, I’m just saying that older members (let’s say 30 and up) visiting in a set environment is not that farfetched at all. Happens all the time….

Folk think they know but they don't know. Heck I wished more older folk did come and see lines if only for a night. When I was on the oldest bruh I met was a 1980 bruh whom was an attorney at the time and still is. He was 15 years in at that time. Didn't touch me once. I would say given the fact that the 32 y/o was there and this ish still went down like that speaks volumes. So Iceman hit it on the head. You have to have that voice of reason, and the respect. Especially dealing with the Bruhs if you don't have a bruh in the room who is a force to be reckoned with when visiting bruhs come then all hayle can break loose. Basically that bruh who says okay set is over goodnight and willing to wreck anyone who doesn't agree.... As far as physically getting with a line.. personally I think after maybe 5-7 years in that should wane dramatically. 10 Years in it should be an after thought. 15 years in... you should be asking crazy questions in the interview and taking in delight by forcing a would be aspirant through coercion to dime himself out that he was once a Kappa interest. Now THAT chit is priceless.. True Story. ;D

yes, I've seen alumni, but they weren't in their 30's. Those at that age had other things on their mind. I think it's different when it comes to women. After so many yrs in, we just leave that to the younger ones. Why is everyone completely shocked with the “home alone” face that a 32 year old member of an Org would be present?
