The purpose of the totem was to prove to yourself that you weren't in anyone ELSE's dream, not that you weren't in your own dream. That's why no one would let anyone else handle their totem... if only you know the special nature of your totem, you had a defense against being "dream-napped" (i.e. pulled into someone else's dream)
No matter how well they architected the setting they wouldn't know the special nature of your totem and thus not be able to replicate it for the dream they pulled you into. However it would not be a defense against being stuck in your OWN dream.
Now... what else you got? This is an excellent point about the totem. Obviously, Nolan accomplished his goal of leaving the viewer wondering, because there are clearly arguments both ways. Which is part of what makes the movie so good and why I summarily ignore the naysayers.
There are lots of ways to prove he was and wasn't asleep. Madea is making the Chirrun argument for being awake. I made the Mal argument and the Random Occurences Argument. Ghost used to the Random Occurences argument to support the idea he was asleep. And I think Outtie used the Chirrun argument to say he was asleep.
The movie had a good concept, a well thought out script, complexity, believability, and a tremendous score to go along with it. Why can't people just give the movie it's props? Haters (yes Dea I'm looking straight at your patriotic a$$ - LOL)
