At one time I was all for making an effort for this but now not so much.
and here's why.
With all the things that our organizations have to work on impressing or convincing MEMBERS that ABC org is worth coming back to shouldn't be high on the list.
From my understanding the main reasons for deactivation are:
Money Personality conflicts.
MONEY:
I understand that once you've join the org that you may not be financially active every year til you die. Life happens and I understand that, but I think people should make some type of attempt. Every year dues need to be paid and just like any other thing in life prices will inflate.
I don't believe in giving discounts to in actives while those of us actives have made the effort and sacrifice to stay active on a consistent basis.
Personality Conflicts
People who were once a part of a chapter don't like the leadership or people in it . Thats life you might not always like the people in leadership or org but quitting doesn't real solve anything. Plus, even if that particular person that you don't get along with leaves that chapter there will always be a person that just as annoying that will take their place.
So in cases like these I feel you should work with it or work around it.
I just don't like the idea of re convincing MEMBERS that org is worth being apart again. Isn't that what we do during interest meeting and such?
Not trying to sound unsisterly, but I feel some kinda way about this.
your thoughts

Why do you sigh? Nationals does not really care if a member enjoys his organization or if he goes to meetings or if he performs any community service. As long as that member pays dues, he is in good standing. Money is what really keeps organizations going. They can always find someone to do some work.

As some of you will look down on what APIL said, it bears a lot of truth. A person that claims financial problems as a reason for not being active is doing two things:
1. Doing EXTREMELY bad financially or
2. Not making their membership a priority
Having said that, I do understand that every organization is different. For example, I have close friends who are members of sororities and they are CONSTANTLY "assessed" for everything from regional conventions, to fundraisers, to whatever else the leadership can think of to make people "pay or go inactive" on top of having to pay regular dues.
This doesn't happen in Alpha (at least not on a broad scale) so I have no experience with it but it does make some of these ladies stress about maintaining current membership.
Money makes the world go 'round and so without it, our organizations have problems maintaining levels of operations.
That's how it is. In full disclosure, I have questioned the spending of my leaders...especially the cost of conventions, to the point that I have considered some kind of protest. Best believe though, if I do protest, it will be as a financial member though. Non-financial members are only heard as long as the doors to the business meetings are open. Once they're closed....your rants are silenced.

Financial obligations are a major factor. However for most, it is only temporary. In my dealing with inactive Sorors, I find the latter to be true. Will it kill you to visit a chapter meeting or at least support programs and fund raisers sponsored by your organization? To me, this is just unacceptable, especially when you are always sporting nalia!

Can you not go online or call HQs to find your local chapter? We don't spoon feed interests why spoon feed members? I have no problem with inviting and welcoming with open arms but your already a member so you know the deal of how we operate. And that just might be the same reason you've been away for so long.

Several months ago I stated on SH that I too no longer care about reclaiming inactive members. If it happens, good. If it doesn’t, shrugs. All relationships are about perceived costs and perceived rewards. And my opinion is most people aren’t active because they've done all they want to do as active members. Money, family, career etc are almost NEVER the real reason. Folks have obtained their rewards, whatever that is for them, and that’s that. The ones that are and remain active do so because, for them, it’s a rewarding experience. C’est la vie.

Good post..... Thing is most don't wanna deal with politics. Most brothers who came in undergrad didn't deal with the political bulchit that happens in these grad chapters... So you send your general dues to nationals and help your young boys out.

Most usually have bounced back from the issue that originally caused them the financial hardship... now, everything else is just a little more important, including vacations and shopping!

Personally, I also tire of the politics but I also realize that the political environment has it's place (at least in Alpha).
With that in mind, we have to find ways to balance the politics with activities that foster brotherhood. Make the organization a fun place for brotherhood. Value is what i'm talking about...but we've had this conversation before.

Yes, this conversation happens way too much!!
It’s so funny to me when I hear people talking about fostering brotherhood and sisterhood in a fraternity or sorority. That’s an oxymoron! If everything was stripped away from our perspective orgs, brotherhood and sisterhood should be only thing that is left, for this is what we are supposed be truly about. We can’t be a service to anyone if we can’t be brotherly or sisterly to our own! I don’t have to like or love you, but I will respect you and hopefully you will do the same! I am I the only one who still feels this way?

Let it be understood when a person speaks of politics we're not talking about handling business. We are talking about the blatant disrespect for protocol, proper decorum, and the commonplace of backroom shenanigans. THAT has no place in any organization period. Nobody is going to put up with that foolishness. I'm sure this isn't present in every grad chapter but its happening for sure.
