So this weekend in DC the 2nd Annual Tommie Smith Track Meet was held for 17 and under youth. While I'm there with my children and their track team, I was thinking about the courage it took for those brothers to do what they did. Do you think today's sports athletes who are at the top of their game would risk so much if under the right circumstances?

In a word: no

Do you think maybe if it were explained to the children early on about the importance of standing up for something then they would want to do it as adults? I grazed over this topic with my children beforehand as apart of black history but really hammered it home during the week leading up to this meet.

As difficult as it was for them to even do what they did, I think they (Tommie Smith and John Carlos) at least had a people who kind of had a shared social conscious that we all needed to fight and sacrifice for this one cause. Without that common cause - it's hard to get people to buy into ANY concept that requires self-sacrifice.
Can you imagine LeBron doing something like what they did today?

True, if LeBron did it...very few would have his back. They would simply say, "That stupid n**** just lost his endorsements...and for what? Some protest bullchyt?!"

...I think Kanye is probably one of the last ones you'll see dare to speak truth to power. Such acts of courage rarely go unpunished.
I wanna say you might see white folks do it - but after the Dixie Chicks even alot of them learned to just keep their head down and keep moving

Vudu...
Say your kid is a star running back... he's in college at (well let's assume he goes to Miami since you wouldn't have it any other way) and is just killing it. Averaging 3 TDs, 350 all purpose, 250 ground, 100 receiving, has sub 4.4 speed, and is excellent in pass block.
Now say Bush was still in office and waging war. He's been working all his life to get in the league and now it's about to happen... should he speak out against Bush and the war? Would you advise him to do it? Principle matters but at what cost?

He was upset that he didn't make it to the finals in the 8 and under 100 meters as he won his heat with ease. But he is 6 so the 7 and 8 year olds times were a tad bit faster than his from other heats. They take the best times regardless of heats. He was upset so he ran the 400 and as he says it ( Dad I was bookin! you seen me?!) and came in first again with his heat and won that event. When he crossed the finish line he turned gave the salute and hit his chest. Yeah this dude getting Maurice Greene arrogant already. lol Its all about keeping them informed. So that speaking out his common place.,

Is it possible to speak out against something without "villianizing" yourself?? like couldn't Kanye have said the same thing he said on stage in an after show interview and it would have been taken as his opinion.

But would it have been as "powerful?" Probably not. Taking a stance on social justice/civil rights issues now can cause people to lose what they've worked hard to achieve. We can say "but it's the right thing," however we do not have to pay the mortage on their mutli-million dollar home. Though I'm sure the criticism won't run very deep, here's Phil Jackson's response about the AZ immigration bill and the city of LA's boycotting of AZ. www.thenation.com/blog/boycott-phil-jackson-why-lakers-fans-should-root-los-suns

What if Will Smith had made the comment after Hurricane Katrina? Or jumped on stage to voice his opinion about B? Would that have made a difference. I was just wondering.

I guess the flip side to this is that Tommie Smith and John Carlos could have worn black gloves AFTER they got off the medal stand. They still would have been giving their opinion...
...but not in the same dramatic way.

Nope. I agree that folks would not risk the endorsements.
