Univ. of Tampa isn't playing! The sorors from UT were unable to graduate with their class because of the alleged hazing. They are also alleging that race may be a factor b/c some white organizations did similar but were not subject to this kind of punishment. Greeks...what do you think? www.tampabay.com/news/courts/civil/ut-sorority-sisters-accused-of-hazing-dont-get-suspension-lifted/1093622UT sorority sisters accused of hazing don't get suspension lifted TAMPA — On the eve of what would have been two of their graduations, three sorority sisters accused of hazing pledges at the University of Tampa were forced to put their academic futures on hold Friday. Earlier this week, the students sought an emergency hearing to lift their almost year-and-a-half-long suspension and graduate on time, said Joseph Bryant, an attorney for the women. The university holds its commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. today at the St. Pete Times Forum. On Friday, Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge Charles "Ed" Bergmann denied the request, declaring the case too complex to be decided in just a couple of hours. Both parties will instead have time to prepare so they can present their information to him in the near future, Bergmann said. The hazing included allegations that the pledges of the historically black Delta Sigma Theta sorority were "yelled at, made to run, do pushups, squats, eat garlic wrapped in Big Red gum and drink hot sauce, hold a match between their fingers while reciting a pledge, had rocks and grass thrown at them and that they were paddled," according to court documents. The case was filed in circuit court Monday. UT officials sought to move it to federal court Thursday, but it was returned to circuit court Friday afternoon. The students, who are identified in the suit as only as M.B., S.C. and L.P., have not been allowed in class, to meet with professors or on campus since their suspension in early April, Bryant said. The women admitted to school officials, he said, that the running, pushups and squats took place, but denied the other allegations. Bryant said white students accused of similar actions at the school received less-severe sanctions and that the women's race may have influenced unfair punishment. John Campbell, an attorney for the school, said the university stands by its decision to suspend the students. Hazing is a third-degree felony in Florida, and the University of Tampa has a zero-tolerance policy against it, he said. According to the state statute, hazing includes "forced consumption of any food" and "forced physical activity that could adversely affect the physical health or safety of the student." This is outrages, but I am with RM. I have heard farrrr worst stories than this. This punishment is a little bit over board where you have fraternities walking free from breaking pledges bones. smh.

UNFORTUNATELY they were caught? Unfortunately Chal? Hmmmm.......... you know what i mean. cut that out 91. Fine, you want the PC version. Here: it is unfotunate for THEM that they have to go through this as a result of being caught. However had they not been doing it in the first place, they would have nothing to worry about. It IS unfortunate that those girls had to endure the hazing, but like it has been said many times before, by going back night after night, you are consenting to being hazed. don't run crying when it ain't over when YOU think it should be.

I am just wondering, what happens to the Chapter Advisers when this type of stuff happens? Does Nationals suspend them from membership?

I wonder if they feel it was all worth it...if they would do it again after seeing what happened. Thats alot to lose just to make some new members.

I'm really trying to understand pledging. I'm fresh outta MIP so the things I learned, and they way i was treated doesn't jive with the things i hear go on when people "pledge" Now one of my prophytes had looks and words that could cut steal but i never felt like i was degraded.

Hazing will be done in 10 years tops.
One of the 'Divine 9' will suspend all undergraduate membership until these chapters die out. All of the other BGLOs will follow suit. Once that happens, all new initiates will know nothing of a pledge process. This will be the same as today's youth not having first-hand experience with Jim Crow segregation.

Maybe I'm naive but I believe the harshness is due to the stoning and paddling, not the gum and garlic.
When will people catch on that "zero tolerance" means just that?

^^ But the gum and garlic are still technically hazing. Maybe not as bad as being stoned and paddled, and they technically could still be facing the same consequences had they not stoned and paddled

They engaged, they got busted. Gotta consider consquences. *rolls eyes at them throwing the race card* My thoughts exactly. If you feel that protecting the gates of your organization mean that you must violate the organizations constitution, break the law, commit a felony....then buck up when you get caught. You thought it was worth the risk and you took it. You rolled the dice and lost. Pay the piper.

Sad situation no matter how you look at it. If I were a parent of one of the Deltas I would be pissed at my daughter right about now.

It's all about maning, or in this case, WO-maning up and facing the consequences for your actions. The problem with any of it is as a few others here have stated....THEY WERE IN VIOLATION regardless of how great or small it was.
WTF can't folks just stick to what their constitutions and by-laws have mandated they can do? I will never understand it. If you're gonna do your dirt (no pun intended) admit it when you get caught and move the hell on!
Cam said it best -- If you feel that protecting the gates of your organization mean that you must violate the organizations constitution, break the law, commit a felony....then buck up when you get caught. You thought it was worth the risk and you took it. You rolled the dice and lost. Pay the piper.

Well, word on SH is that when these girls had their probate, they did this little skit where they told the crowd that some people will NEVER get to wear their letters and there are some people who will NEVER wear their letters AGAIN!!
So my question is, I wonder what happened after the probate? I am pretty darn sure that some suspended prophytes wanted to set it off at that probate.

And if that's true, they should have kept their damned mouths shut about whatever internal situations they were dealing with. Why is it these nu skool Greeks think that they gain "cred" by telling all their business to the public and to other Greeks? I guess that's what leads so many to post all their inner workings on Facebook and YouTube....and then wonder how they get caught. Dumb!
