U.S. soldier Joshua Taber waterboards his daughter, 4, because she couldn't recite alphabet: police By Brian Kates DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Originally Published:Monday, February 8th 2010, 9:05 AM Updated: Monday, February 8th 2010, 10:15 AM Related News * Articles * U.S. death toll in Afghanistan this year up to 14 with four more deaths * Army files charges against soldier mom who refused to deploy * We are gaining in Afghanistan, McChrystal says, despite deadly new attacks * Army ignored Fort Hood rampage suspect's red flags: Pentagon review A GI waterboarded his 4-year-old daughter in their suburban Tacoma, Wash., home because she couldn't recite the alphabet, police reported. Joshua Tabor, 27, allegedly admitted to police he used the torture technique because his daughter was terrified of water and he was furious she didn't know her ABCs. Tabor was arrested Sunday and charged with assault of a child. Tabor, a soldier at the Lewis-McChord base in Tacoma, Wash., told police he held the little girl's head backward in a sink of water, Yelm Police Chief Todd Stancil told the the local newspaper, the Nisqually Valley News. Stancil said Tabor had admitted to using this means of punishment three to four times. Police found the little girl locked in a bathroom with bruises on her back and scratch marks on her neck and throat. Asked how she got the bruises, the girl is said to have replied, "Daddy did it." Police did not release Tabor's rank or the nature of his military service. His base is home to units that have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The girl, who was not identified, had been in Tabor's court-ordered custody for about a month and a half. After his arrest, she was placed in the care of Child Protective services, Stancil said. She had moved to Yelm from Montana where she lived with her grandparents. Her mother lives in Kansas. Cops arrested Tabor after neighborhood residents reported him walking around his neighborhood drunk, wearing a Kevlar Army helmet and threatening to break windows. Tabor's girlfriend told police that Tabor has an anger problem and beats his daughter, Stancil said. Tabor reportedly said his girlfriend helped hold the girl down in the water. She had not been charged. The couple has a 2-month-old child together, Stancil said. Wow... you know we really must to a better job of helping our soliders adjust to civilian life. A week or two of debriefing isn't enough. The girlfriend should be charged to, why would participate in this as the rational person in the room?

These soldiers will be the new dope fiends for the next 40 years. The Vietnam vets crack and smack addicts are getting old. When the troops come home it will be like the 80's all over again.

You would think the Feds. would see this coming and try to do something at any cost. It's scary though, 4-6 Presidents from now will be or could be an Iraqi/Afghanistan War Vet.

I guarantee if that had been her child instead of his, she would have offered to take the punishment in the child's place and not hold her down. I'm not saying he wasn't abusive towards her but on the real participating in a torture technique on a child?

This soldier needs help, the kind of help that he clearly has not received as yet. This is sad for the little girl, and also for him.
I have a good friend who works in army suicide prevention (for soldiers), and she concurs that they do not get the support that they need when they return from down range. Sad, but true.
This breaks my heart on several levels.

Now I was all for "needing his behind kicked" until I read one of the neighbors reporting him walking around in his army helmet.
Diva said it this soldier does need help. He's sick. And to think this is just a mild case. How many other cases have we all heard when a soldier done some crazy. I believe the latest is that Texas (?) incident when that soldier went on a rampage killing people.
Marvin Gaye said it best "War is not the answer". It don't just affect the enemy or the opposing Country. It affects our community in our own country as well. Which brings me to say war is wrong on so many levels.
Pray for our Soldiers yall.

This really makes me question how and if they evaluated him before they placed her in his custody.

This really makes me question how and if they evaluated him before they placed her in his custody. It's possible she was placed in his custody before he was deployed. He could have placed her with the grandparents and then got her when he came back. Usually that's how it works with deployed parents if one doesn't have custody. If that is the case I could see not evaluating him upon his return because that's almost like saying "okay you went to serve our country now let's see if you are still fit." I know that's not what it would mean but I could see that interpretation being an issue. It seems like there is something that can be done to make the transition smoother.

Pep there IS a way to make this transitions smoother. It's called Therapy. Our soldiers took care of us (regardless of the reason (s) why) but they took care of us as a Nation. I think it's time to take care of them. They should NOT have problems with medical coverage be it physical or emotional. We should not have homeless veterans either. IMO war Veterans should receive free medical coverage. Our Va hospitals need a serious upgrade as well.

VP is correct. I have lived with a vet who sufferes from PTSD. Sadly, we are creating another generation of maladaptive individuals.
