it will be march since i got a relaxer (happy dance) thinking about doing the big chop because I CANNOT STAND THESE TWO DIFFERENT TEXTURES!!!!!!!! if i wear my hair in its natural state it looks like this IM SICK OF THIS EFFIN SHAG! ive tried two strand twists...and other methods and they all turn out the same way...lionel shagtastic aside from wearing dreads or braids...what are some methods to make my hair look presentable? my natural pattern is a "s"...but ive notice i goes from deep waves on some areas to tight spiral curls in others...what can u do to get them to get along? also is there any product or method u can use to reduce strinkage? My last perm was in March. My naturalveristy is arriving soon. My initial goal was to transition slowly by cutting out the perm, but it did not go as planned. I eventually chose to chop off the perm. Folks kept telling me that my hair would grow faster once I let go of the perm and although it may not be the case for all, it has been true for me. I cut off all the perm about 2-3 months ago because like you, I got tired of the different textures. Since I chopped off the perm (leaving me with about 2.5 inches of hair) I've notice that my natural hair has 2 different textures. So imagine that, prior to my cut I was actually dealing with 3 different textures. I knew it but couldn't believe it. Natural hair is a learning process and it's a SERIOUS journey. ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE!! ;D I've been permed so long I didn't know what to expect and was terrified of the unknown. I' have NEVER had short hair. I preferred long hair and still do. My current all natural styles have been coils and coil out. This weekend I'm getting a two strand twists. When you're hair is as short as mine choices are very limited UNLESS you choose to get some type of weave or extensions. My advice is LEARN your hair. You will have good days and bad days -who don't??! BUT honestly, I'm just happy to have healthy hair and a healthy scalp. It could be worse... I'm looking forward to growing my hair and swimming...OH YEAH!!

ive tried heat and let it air dry...and it turned out the SAME way now when i tried to two strand twist i just twisted that shit up any kinda way...maybe i should try it the way u said ive heard of some ladies having to do the bc twice...is that something u have had to do? When I asked about the heat I was talking about the different textures you mentioned. But yeah when you twist try and twist the way you want your hair to fall. I had to learn to do this with braids and twists because my hair would be looking really crazy and falling in weird places. Now I don't know about the 2 BC thing. I did a few haircuts during my transition but I only did one BC. Maybe they did another BC to get rid of heat damage? That I could understand. I just let mine grow out and trimmed it off every few months.

I have always been a fan of women with natural hair, but i recently seen a girl again who went natural and it just doesnt' work for her. She was cutish with her long permed hair, now she just looks horrible with her hair. I support her decision tho.

Are you using any heat? This kind of sounds like my hair after I BCed and had a lot of heat damage from blow drying and flat ironing so much during my transition. As far as the styles I wear twists of different sizes and twist outs, braids and braid outs, puffs, fros, eventually buns, etc and they all look presentable to me but it just might depend on what your definition of presentable is. Maybe the shag effect comes from how you twist or maybe the direction you twist in? You have to treat the twists like a rollerset, where you roll your hair the way you want it to fall. ive tried heat and let it air dry...and it turned out the SAME way now when i tried to two strand twist i just twisted that shit up any kinda way...maybe i should try it the way u said ive heard of some ladies having to do the bc twice...is that something u have had to do? Maybe not another BC but my hair grows in the same weird pattern you describe. I just have it reshaped when I get it trimmed. Make sure the stylist knows you want it TRIMMED not cut! As far as ideas... bantu knots seem to work with different textures, fro hawk is a funky kinda style that can work with two textures, flat twists, you can pretty much replicate any style that you would do with relaxed hair

... you can pretty much replicate any style that you would do with relaxed hair yeah, I definitely just wear my hair the same way I did when it was permed. If I want soft-waves, straw-set, press & curl, a weave, up-do or whatever else, I just go on and get it. I went natural to have more versatility, not to be once again confined to the same 3 or 4 styles. I enjoy this because my heat styles come out fuller and my "lazy styles" look way better natural than relaxed (i.e. my afro puff or afro bun look much better than my straight stringy ponytail or messy bun)

I think natural hair offers WAY more diversity in styles IMO. You can do all that and then some. I do miss my perm. I swear I do BUT I wanted and needed a change. Not to mention what it did to the soda cans -LoL. That was enough to keep me on coarse (thanks Lev

ok my Natural Hair Queens, Wifey seems to be on track (or "off track") " Get it? OFF.Track. Nothing? Alrighty then. Her hair is doing well. Even with the perm it seem to have a full look in the back. Does that "full" look comes from the perm? I think it's growing or she has more hair than we both expected.
I'm trying to "help" her change from the inside out. If I can just police those darn candy bars she eats.....lol. We both make it a point to drink water. More vegies and less meat.
Ladies, Do you think Stress is a big part of hair growth/lose?

Perhaps the haircut has some strategic layers and all (which are more noticeable due to the perm) to give it a healthy full look in the back. And chances are, yes, she had more hair than ya'll both noticed when it was drawn up and curly.
Stress? Absolutely! Stress can affect everything about us physically, including our skin and hair. And word. You are what you eat. Protein is supposed to aid in hair and skin health, so maybe the occasional omelet handful of nuts wouldn't hurt. H20=way2go
and lol @ your hair puns. Keep em coming :-)

Stress can affect your body in different ways
If I get too stressed I skip my cycle or my hair sheds.
My sister losses weight
So it depends on the person

Yeah curly hair can look smaller or shorter than straight hair. I tried explaining this to my mom a few times...I was pretty unsuccessful.
Stress is a definite factor. My hairs sheds like crazy when I'm stressed out. Breakage could be from dry hair or split ends but when stress, medication, diet, hormonal changes, etc could cause it to come out from the root.

Has anyone tried garlic shampoo? One of my friends used garlic shampoos once upon a time. She is very much so into hair products and said that it is very good for hair because it doesn't have salt as one of the ingredients. Her was looking fly when she used it. It was silky and shining. The thing she complained about was the smell and that it gave her major dandruff. But other than that, she said it was good. I myself is looking for a good shampoo. What kind of good (possibly organic) shampoo do you all recommend for curly hair? I'm trying to strive away from the perm scene.

I use Burt's Bees natural shampoo and conditioner. I really like them; they're a much less expensive alternative to the DevaCurl (sulfate-free) line. DevaCurl was great, but I kinda need the lather (maybe its psychological) and I had to use much more of it. Aaand it cost $22 a bottle.
Burt's is also sulfate/paraben free and is like 98% natural ingredients.

If you're experimenting try and buy samples of stuff or get small sizes of stuff from people. It's the worst feeling to buy stuff (especially the pricey stuff), find out it doesn't work and then you have bunch of stuff you can't use, LOL.

^^This is my concern about some of the natural specific products. You talkin' 30-50 bucks a pop for a lot of them, and I'm NOT a PJ (Product Junkie for newbies). Anybody have any rec's for somebody who goes back & forth b/t straight & curly? I have to (for couple reasons), and I don't want: - Major heat damage - Lots of breakage when I'm curly (<--this HAS been a problem) Suggestions? If you're experimenting try and buy samples of stuff or get small sizes of stuff from people. I don't buy anything that costs $30. The most expensive thing I buy is Qhemet and that is $16 and it lasts for a long time. It doesn't have to be expensive.

My FAVORITE shampoo's as a natural are: - Carrot Milk & Honey Shampoo Bar - Ayurvedic Herb Shampoo Bar ...both soaps are from Chargrin Valley AND Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo - has no sulfates (LOVE THIS STUFF!!!) I heard great things about Giovanni, but I used it once while I was transisitoning and it did nothing for me and gave it to my sister and she is all natural and LOVED IT. Just remember, what's good for the goose may not be good for the gander
