I think we talked about something similar to this on the old OO once, but the convo never got too in-depth.
Anyway, I came across this video after watching the DST Probate for Wilberforce from '04 (great show, BTW). Needless to say, the title threw me for a loop. I was a DelTeen in HS, and I never saw anything like this.
When the video opened, and I saw their hands, well...
Watch the vid, then I have a couple questions.
1. W/O going into detail about your org's business, does your (D9 only please) sorority/fraternity condone this type of thing?
2. Considering we're "non-hazing" organizations at the collegiate level, where are the line names, #s, and the right to probate coming from for high schoolers?
3. How do you feel about such comments as: 'They know they're not Deltas...we are Deltas in the making.'?
4. If they have signs, calls, steps, strolls, and "history" in these orgs, do you feel these young men/women will respect the traditional process of truly becoming Greek? Does it cause a sense of entitlement?
This is NOT a slight to the Deltas or any of their processes. I know there are other youth groups that do similar things; this is just the 1st YA "probate" video I've ever come across.

We have a youth group. The Rhoer club
They can step if we choose too include them.
They have a similar induction process and considers each other sisters.
They have a hand sign
No calls that i know of. and we made them some naila.
We kept them from getting out of hand by not having them all at the same school not to have any cliques forming.
yea now that I think about it it is ran like a junior sorority.
But I think the guiding chapter has a lot to do with just how out of hand it can get.

Um, I'm all for mentoring young girls and boys, but I think all this right here is just taking it to far and might give some the sense of entitlement. But what these highschool aux don't realize is that they have it harder trying to pursue the specific org. in college simply because they were apart of said aux. org, at least from what I've seen.

*quotes/paraphrases herself from the Spreading traditions thread*
"D9 members who encourage this ish are committing treason"......I think that's close enough. Once again, get yo own swag!

I can't see the video, but I know I can get quite passionate about this kinda stuff. I really, truly HATE the youth auxiliaries being handled in the fashion described by the comments.

I mean, the handsign got me pissed and I'm not even a Delta. That is to entirely too dang gone close for comfort.
And why do aux. groups need "coming out" shows, calls, handsigns, etc?
I thought aux groups for highschool was about making a positive impact i.e. mentoring, tutoring, doing community service togehter, going on college tours, being like a big brother/big sister.
What does all that other stuff got to do with that?

Asked the same question, JA. I mean, I pretty much always wanted to be a Soror (family ties). Our Grad chapters in the area didn't have auxs, so based on the activities they did, my family encouraged me to participate in DelTeen. We didn't have any of these types of events, nor did we do probates, pledge or any of that. The members of their Alum chpt. made decisions about who could join, not us. Hence the when I saw this. In another video, the Delta Gems are in a Que stepshow, and it looks like they're throwing UPSIDE DOWN PYRAMIDS during their routine. I felt like you - pissed off & I'm not even a Delta (how disrespectful). Then, I heard some Deltas calling, so I figured some of them must be cool with it.

Here is that show: And, of course, there had to be some "Ivy Teens" on YouTube, too : Sigma Betas, Junior Kappas, the list goes on. Just take a few minutes to search them when you have some time. These kids are out of control...but it came from some of us!

Begin Unpopular Opinion: They were good. They are better than some D9 sorority performances I have seen. Their precision was good (which means they had to practice an awful lot and had extensive guidance), and I have to believe that they're self-esteem just had to be off the richter after finishing that show (to Coleman in general.... um SASE y'all? Aren't we in this business?)
Did you see how the other kids in the crowd were filming it and watching intently? You think that they won't want to be in a show like that someday after seeing that? You think there was nothing good for a group of young ladies on stage, dressed like "LADIES", carrying themselves lady like, being admired as ladies, and praised as ladies?
Continue Rant: obvioulsy the chapter that helped them do this was alright with it, they were doing the stroll along with them at the end. Besides everyone is stepping now anyway - honor societies, collegiate auxillaries, high school teams, why not let these auxs do it? Especially if it can be used for a vehicle of good? The only problem that I really have is what some of the music choice selections.
Lastly we're ok with the Sprite Sell Out Step Off that benefits mostly Sprite - but we're not ok with it for the youth?
*Climbs down off soapbox*

You are ok with some aux throwing up hand signs that are close to your frats Damie, that can be EASILY seen as one if not looked at closely? You ok with these highschool kids pledging each other to be in something that doesn't last a lifetime? You don't think this doesn't give them a sense of entitlement for when they do go to college?
There is much more to say but I'll stop there. I don't believe what these youth aux are doing now is in alignment with the orginal intent of starting these aux orgs in the first place.

As a matter of fact, I am o.k. with the aux groups throwing up hand signs. It's not my preference but it is a small matter in the grand scheme of things. Plus, they are doing so with permission of the presiding chapter. Honor societies are pledging themselves, high school step teams are pledging themselves, collegiate aux are pledging themselves, hell football teams, track teams, basketball teams, and fake orgs (MIAKAs) are pledging themselves - we have NO control or influence over them, at least we can influence our acknowledged auxs operations. And given that there are so many ways for kids to gain a sense of entitlement I hardly see this as the lynch pin to the floodgates of inward thinking of youth.
To me this is the least issue of a bag of undesirable issues. We have far more serious thing to worry about than aux being aligned to their original intent (like for example the actual ORGS being aligned to their original intent).

Well, Cold, did you like them or not?
OS opinion: I don't mind high school groups however I don't think they should have BGLO flavor. They need to stick to neutral ground. There is already too much peer pressure in high school ,,,and then to add some college entity into the mix....further separation,. I don't like it.

They certainly wouldn't do so without permission (which is what I alluded to before). I have certainly seen youth groups "hop" though and it was clear where they got it from. I don't see that that's much different than the posted "step shows".

While i'm not a huge fan of the youth auxiliaries having calls and signs, i'll have to side with Damie on this one.
Among the staggering list of concerns our organization must address....as long as it's kept in check....i'm not willing to waste any time worrying about some kids wanting to be like us.

I never had a problem with our Youth Aux(Sigma Beta Club) until they started developing more of our characteristics.. Now they have their own hand sign and call which is a bit much... It was designed to be a club and nothing more.. I don't approve of them being a "junior frat"..

My question when I saw this...."How old is too old?" Honestly, the Warden brought this young man to my attention. He was a nice young man, very mannerable and seemed to be about 14-16 years old.
Had that shirt been worn by a 5 year old....maybe. My son has a "My Daddy is an Alpha" shirt but he looks young. The Warden's logic is that if you can't tell how old the person is and they could POSSIBLY be in college....they shouldn't wear the shirt. LOL!!

Those shirts should definitely not be worn by anyone past 5th grade.
