The recent Gates case, the Boston police officer calling Gates a "banana eating jungle monkey", and others are strong examples. Racism and negative stereotypical portrayals of African Americans Comes in many forms.
John Taylor and his wife, Donna who live in North Carolina , recently went in to COSTCO in Greensboro and could not believe what they saw perched on the shelf for sale. As the photos show, the baby doll is being hugged by a monkey and the doll has a cap on its head that says " lil'monkey" !They have lodged complaints with the COSTCO Corporate HQS and while their efforts succeeded in getting the doll pulled from the Greensboro store, the doll is still on sale in Winston Salem and likely in other locations. These dolls are an insult to us all and need to be pulled from all COSTCO stores or wherever they are being sold. COSTCO also owes their Customers an apology. I hope you are as outraged as I am and if so, call COSTCO HQs and demand that this product be removed from their shelves without delay. It is the "Cuddle Baby" product #404860 and the corporate headquarters number is 800-7742678. *grabs picket sign and heads over to nearest Costco*

What is going in marketing and PR classes throughout the country?! Seriously, who sat in the marketing presentation and said "let's do this!"

This doll comes in white and hispanic, it's funny but not surprising how only the Black doll is discussed.

What is going in marketing and PR classes throughout the country?! Seriously, who sat in the marketing presentation and said "let's do this!" That's what I'm wondering. Even if the intent wasn't racist at all... no one at the table said, "hey, guys - this lil' monkey thing... this could be a problem in certain cases". It's like no one even thinks anymore.

The problem is that Marketing organizations are not diverse enough. When you have a group of White people sitting around making decisions on how to market to minorities with no minority insight, iognorant ish like this happens.

I don't think the intent was to be racist but its clearly ignorant and just plain dumb. ANYTIME you associate the word monkey to a Black person/item, you allow the opportunity for your intentions to be questioned. And I don't think its a case of Black people being overly sensitive, the facts are the facts. Black people in this country were routinely insulted by being called monkey; Whites and Hispanics were not.

I just hope there wasn't a black person there and just didn't say anything....

This is interesting especially in light of what Bun H stated...
I mentioned in Random Thoughts the other day that a white lady at walmart called my son a chunky monkey. I was shocked out my mind and ready to give her the NIGGA ACT! but she accompanied that statement with other terms of endearment (e.g. he is so precious, i just wanna squeeze him....) that I took a breath and wondered if she meant to make an insensitve racist remark or was she genuinely admiring my son. Well of course I mentioned to my family members and they were all outraged. Later that night I was on the net doing some baby research and many WHITE mothers were calling their lil ones chunky monkey! Its a term they give babies who are on the chunky side and monkeys are cute animals especially the baby ones...Im glad I never went off because I would have felt stupid later...
Sometimes we need to think FIRST with our heads and not our emotions...

I know she would have been offended if I was white and said that.
