I agree with it to the degree that the concepts, ideals, history, etc...is much bigger than any one member or any group of members.
I do have to add that an organization is only as good is it's collective members though. This greatness is graded on a very weighted average.
Look at it like a grade point average....Great members are worth 4 points...worthless sloths are worth 0.....I'm not talking about people who do nothing...i'm talking about those who do things to damage the image.
So for every great member....balance him/her with that worthless dude/dudette who makes your org look bad.

Do you agree with the following statement? My org is bigger than any member. Aces, As a Past International President told me, "every member is equal". To me that means no matter your title or position, it boils down to the fact that we are all members of this organization to make things work! It is the bigger concept that takes priority, but without the member, the concept cannot be produced.

I understand that the member drives the idea. but is the member bigger than the idea? or does the idea transcend each member?

the idea should live within each member and be seen through the acts which the member chooses to do.

In this case, I would say no, because without the members, the ideals and principles would not exist in such a fashion.

I agree--yes, the org is BIGGER than any one member. It's all about being a part of something bigger than yourself; a multitude of disparate parts making up the whole.

ROFL! This is kind of random, but in the city I used to live in, the symbol of the police department was a beehive. All of the officers wore the behive symbol on their sleeve. It was supposed to represent being a part of something bigger than yourself. I thought that was kind of neat. This post reminded me of that.

I don't think any type of org is bigger than it's members. It is the people who draft the principles and mission. it's people who carry it out.
However, organizations can be bigger than one given member, depending on the setting.
If there is an area where there is one representative of the organization and there is a group of people who are intially being introduced to that organization through that representative, then the person can become bigger than organization, because that person becomes the organization in that arena.
...thus making the original concept contexual.
