I made this thread with undergrad chapters in mind, but anyone can answer. What was a definite DEAL-BREAKER for interests in your UG chapter? Cute chicks only? Non-Christians need not apply? Legacies only?
Run 'em if ya got em!

L,
For us, we had no hang ups on anything as trivial as an interest’s appearance. We are (straight) men and I viewed interests as my possible brother – not my possible significant other..lol
I can say the biggest deal breaker in UG was, first and foremost, if you were previously on line for another Org – Don’t even bother expressing interest this way. We don’t want anybody’s seconds and you’ll get called out quick. Other than that - No real deal breakers other than someone having the gull to show to up to an interest meeting for the first time, not knowing any Bros name’s, not having spent any time with any Bros, not having come out to any Alpha sponsored events, etc. – Forget about it.
Oh yeah - being a Legacy, the best friend of an Alpha back home, the son of an AKA, etc, etc, got you no favors or special treatment. If you weren’t already Frat, you were still considered an interest that had to pay his own dues the hard way. That’s all.

I've seen pictures of fraternity and sorority chapters that make me think they must purposely seek out folks with a certain appearance (or make the unfit ones stay out of pictures, lol). Could it possibly be a coincidence that an entire chapter of Kappas has locs and washboard bellies or an entire SGRho chapter with light skin, long hair and small waists.
My UG chapter didn't have these hangups, necessarily, but we were somewhat biased against atheists (who were plentiful on our campus). Also (by pure coincidence) 7/8ths of my chapter's initiates were a D cup or better, lol

We tried to avoid........ *Omega groupies *People clearly wanting to be upgraded (y'know the kind that NEVER sat at the cool kids' table before) *Folks who partied too much and publicly (there were A LOT of these in New Orleans) *People who told us the day they hit the yard that they were legacies (don't use your folk as a crutch, it should naturally show without telling us)
I wish I could say everyone in my UG chapter was hot but unfortunately we went for substance in some cases :-)

91, how do you mean "clearly wanting an upgrade." Can you be more specific? You mean, you never took unpopular girls?

I don't recall anyone really being rejected. We were very small so our lines were pretty big in comparison. If you knew someone, you were a guaranteed shoe-in. And legacies too!

Also, like Iceman said, if you tried out for another sorority and got rejected, don't EVEN think about it. But my chapter sought out involved individuals. If your GPA wasn't stellar, but you had a lot of community and campus invovlement, we took that into account when it came to your GPA. Now, if you had the bare min. GPA and wasn't involved in anything, er, uh, no.
If no one really knew you, if you didn't attend events, if that interest meeting was the first time we saw you and even knew you were a student at the university, that wasn't a good look either.
And, if you had a bad reputation on campus and didn't know how to carry yourself, that wasn't a good look either.

I can say that we did specifically seek leaders. If you were a male, and president of the sophmore, junior or senior class...and weren't already greek, you stood a pretty good chance with us. If you held an office in SGA...you definitely had a good chance. Dean's List or Honor Roll....almost hands down.
For me (along with those attributes,) if you were well-spoken and confident, you were practically a sure-in.

Did your chapter have any membership criteria that were different from your national criteria? For example, my UG chapter required more than one letter of rec and we had a slightly higher GPA than the national minimum

LOL.
One thing is overzealous, non-discrete and non-humble interests. We had an incident in the grad chapter where one interest was saying in so little words how it wasn't he that was trying to obtain Kappa, but mainly Kappa was trying to obtain him! O Really! He just knew he was going to be a member and told the third party such. Word got back to us. We had a line. He was not on it. Nor will he ever be.
Not good look

91, how do you mean "clearly wanting an upgrade." Can you be more specific? You mean, you never took unpopular girls? We had one young lady who literally told us, "I've never been popular and I want to feel what that feels like". She had the grades and the service but clearly had some esteem problems. I steer clear of people who want the sorority to make them into something different or better. She verbalized it but I've seen the signs in so many applicants. We are not your therapy.

I was told that at the interest meeting before mine, one chick stood up and actually told my prophytes that AKA was not ready for her. LMAO! At the interest meeting, in front of everyone. Needles to say, she was never accepted for membership on my campus, lol!
There was another chick that had come to my interest meeting, and word got out that she spit on someone cause she didn't like them. She was not accepted, and still is not an AKA to this day.

Legacies only? Run 'em if ya got em! I had a BS who did not want any ugly people in our chapter and voiced that opinion loudly. For 3 lines, there were no ugly chicks. Then...well... After a certain year, no auxillary members were accepted although one is in now. No interests of other orgs. No GPAs below 3.0, preferably 3.5. No campus hoes. You had to have community/campus involvement. Nobody not willing to pledge. Yea, my chapter was pretty tough to get into.
