I think I'm confused about the specifics of a universal health care system.
If I am a reponsible working person with a decent health care plan of my own, why would I want to pay to help take care of other people who are not contributing to the system?
Remember, America is the only place where you can eat fast food all day every day for 10 years and then sue the fast food company because you got sick. I don't want to contribute my money to a system that takes care of people who don't take care of themselves and don't contribute.
Is my perception of universal health care wrong??

Mike Huckabee made a very valid statement and I paraphrase..
We have a Health Care system and not a System of Health or Health System
This system is set up to perpetuate itself. You don't get a discount on your health insurance for being healthy. There is no difference. You will be charged the same high premium whether you are a health nut or couch potato. Some health systems (especially where they have universal coverage) have incentives for doctors who keep healthy patients.
Some fear that if this system were implemented, doctors would start dumping patients kinda like schools who get incentives when students do well will start culling it's students from the rolls. Interesting, huh?
In any event, we will end up supporting those without healthcare. Someone will pay for their ultimate care. That someone is you- the taxpayer.

Cam I work for an insurance company and we do offer discounts on premiums for healthy individuals. It can range from 10-20%. Insurance is about risk and contrary to popular belief, we don't want unhealthy insureds.

But for those who are insured through their companies, how many of them actually feel or receive that discount? That's what i'm talking about.
The insurance companies are just a part of a broken system. They have to function within this system just as the pharmaceutical companies and health care providers do. The problem is that we are operating a system which should, at its' most basic levels, be about the health and welfare of the people but instead it is based on the profit system.
The two cannot co-exist.
And there is also the issue of how do we deal with illegal aliens? If they walk into a hospital, you can bet that they will receive care.

Cam, please don't get me started on illegal aliens. I'll turn into Lou Dobbs in this joint.
I guess I am just selfish and don't want to pay for something for other people.

That's true Cam. But we are paying for other people now. It's called Title 19.

Hillary Clinton trying to introduce universal healthcare to this country is the very reason why I decided to pursue Healthcare Administration in grad school.
It's ridiculous to think that everyone should pay for healthcare whether they can afford it or not. Its unfair to the people who actually pay taxes and have a job to support people that do not have employment. I worked at a bank for a short time, and let me tell you, people would come with thousands and thousands of dollars in US Treasury money (welfare), with checks for each of their seven kids, and not have to work a day. So why should I have to support them when they get sick too? Meanwhile, here I am, getting taxes taken out of my check, having coverage, and having to pay a premium when I get sick too? I'm going to try to change the status of healthcare in this country, because it is seriously getting absolutely ridiculous.

Oh, and then she wants to make a path to legalization for illegal aliens, and she actually thinks they are going to pay a fine for sneaking in. Ha...but that's another subject.
