Bryant Purvis One of the teenagers awaiting trial in the Jena Six assault case in Louisiana was arrested this week after a fellow student at his new school in Carrollton accused him of assault, police said.
Bryant Purvis, 19, recently moved to North Texas to live with an uncle, Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Jason Hatcher. The 6-foot-6 Purvis attends Hebron High School where he plays on the basketball team.
Back home in Jena, Purvis was one of the black students accused of assaulting a white student in 2006, which led to heated protests that prosecutors were racially biased.
Carrollton police don't believe race was a factor in this week's incident at Hebron, based on statements from both Purvis and the other student, who is 18, said Sgt. John Singleton, a police spokesman.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, after a basketball game Tuesday night, Purvis found that two of his car's tires were flat.
The next day, according to the student who made the complaint, he was first approached by two boys who asked him if he flattened the tires on Purvis' car. The student next felt someone approach him from behind, grab him by the neck and shove him down, the affidavit states.
Purvis wrote in his statement that "I walked over to him and grabbed him by his neck, then told him not to mess with my car anymore, then I left," according to the affidavit.
Purvis faces a charge of assault causing bodily injury, a misdemeanor, according to Denton County Jail records. Bail was set at $1,000, and he was released at 1:27 a.m. Thursday, records show.
Purvis' mother, Tina Jones, told the Alexandria, La., Daily Town Talk newspaper that someone had told her son who vandalized his car.
The Jena Six were initially charged with attempted murder after a Dec. 4, 2006, assault on a white student. Charges were reduced, but the original counts caused angry complaints of harsh, racially motivated prosecution that led to 20,000 people marching last fall in Jena.
Purvis is charged with aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit battery in the Jena case. Trial is set for March. If convicted of both charges, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 22 1/2 years in prison.
