Kappa Alpha Psi Mourns the Passing of Brother Percy E. Sutton, Esquire
PHILADELPHIA, PA (December 2009) - The Grand Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Dwayne M. Murray, Esq., remarks on the passing of Brother Percy E. Sutton, (New York Alumni '71) who was one of the quintessential examples of achievement in every field of human endeavor. Sutton was a pioneering civil rights attorney who represented Malcolm X and his family before launching successful careers as a political power broker and media mogul, founding Inner City Broadcasting -- one of the most successful minority-owned radio and media companies in the country. "It is hard for many to imagine that Brother Sutton was the son of a slave and the youngest of 15 children. Percy was born in 1920 and went on to serve his country as one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen in World War II and later to break racial political barriers to serve in the New York State Assembly before taking over as Manhattan Borough president in 1966. He became the highest-ranking black elected official in the state. His desire to achieve led Sutton to initiate campaigns for the U.S. Senate and mayor of the city of New York. Sutton's influence in politics, particularly in Harlem, earned him the title "Dean of Harlem Politics" and credited him with the election of the most powerful House member, Charles Rangel, the current Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee, and the ascension of David Paterson to become the current Governor of New York State. His media career began in 1971, with his brother Oliver. Sutton purchased two radio stations in New York City and later expanded to stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit and San Antonio. However his purchase and renovation of the famed Apollo Theater has been widely acclaimed as the reason the Harlem landmark continues to stand today. While Brother Sutton's legal career is defined by representing Malcolm X, Sutton also handled the cases of more than 200 defendants arrested in the South during the 1963-64 civil rights marches, and served two terms as president of the New York office of the NAACP. Percy Sutton never forgot his Kappa roots -- joining the fraternity while he served as Manhattan Borough President. He was a financial member of New York Alumni Chapter from the moment he was initiated and provided viable resources to the establishment of the New York Alumni Foundation in 1988 and routinely donated time and resources to the chapter and the Foundation. He also was a consistent resource of advice and information to the New York Alumni Chapter and its leadership and donated his time to speak at Kappa Functions, such as Founders' Days and memorial services. It was widely known that no matter how busy Brother Sutton was, when he met another Kappa man or received a call from a Brother, he made a point to give his time and wisdom. "Each Brother, no matter where we are in our lives and careers, should look at the example that Brother Sutton provided as to how Brothers of high achievement and immense influence should intertwine Kappa into the rest of their lives," Brother Murray said. Brother Murray announced that the fraternity is encouraging each chapter with a sustained Kappa League Program to make the life of Brother Sutton a part of their agendas. No information is available at this time regarding the Celebration of Life of Brother Sutton.
