my thread disappeared I don't feel like writing all the ish I previously wrote so I will sum it up... NC passed the ban on gay marriage yesterday. Predictably, religion played a big role in the debate. Many believe that it should, many beleive that it should. What are your thoughts?

my thread disappeared I don't feel like writing all the ish I previously wrote so I will sum it up... You do this a lot. Slow your butt down!!! NC passed the ban on gay marriage yesterday. Predictably, religion played a big role in the debate. Many believe that it should, many beleive that it should. *brushing up on my Reignese* I actually feel like it was wrong to use religion as a major part of the debate. Reason being, everyone doesn't "subscribe" to the same types of religion. So what may be truth in YOUR organization may not be truth in theirs. I think Panama of VSB explained it quite well when he said: I don’t mean to get all heretic or anything, but in my opinion, the Bible is a great book full of a lot of great stories. It’s the greatest quote book ever and the life lessons involved are definitely intended to help one live a fruitful and righteous life. Basically, the Bible is the extended version of the poem entitled “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten” I feel like nearly everything in the Bible is subject to interpretation. I’m also not alone in this thinking since nearly every religion and denomination has seen fit to interpret scriptures to fit their own leanings.
Granted, the Bible is a bit more clear when it comes to homosexuality and marriage. However, it’s a man-made document. And plus, what if I’m an atheist? (I’m not). But if I don’t believe in the Bible or God for that matter, why should I be constrained to the principles therein. A government that purports to separate church and state altogether gets to decide my martial status, effectively based on religious traditionalism? I have big problems with that.

President Obama came out and support gay marriage.... Do you think this will hurt or help his chances for reelection this year.. I'm not sure about helping, but I do feel like the "right" will definnitely hold it against him. At the same times, though, I've recently become aware of just how big the LGBT community really is, and I know how hard they go in on something they feel supports their "cause" so the voters/support he may lose by taking this stance will be replaced with the Rainbow Club (as my cousin calls it).

The politics of gay marriage is a simple game of divide and conquer and fear mongering. The issue of gay marriage is a civil one and therfore should be approached accordingly....
*soapbox*
If we are going to politicize the issue of whether or not the gay community has the right to be legally married based on a moral or biblical premise, then let's advance the conversation toward other biblical abominations that should be considered, no?
Why don't we take into consideration the rights of civil marriage of those who cheat, lie and steal? How about those who are in second marriages? Why is one sin or abomination worse that the other? Why is one sin being debated and not the others regarding who can marry legally and who can't?
This is all bullshyt and the black community gets suckered into this baseless argument time and time again....
*off soapbox*
Will this hurt President Obama's re-election chances? Fair question, but likely not. However, the black community is key to his re-election and this is a hotly debated topic on black radio. The bible-beaters are adament about the President being wrong on this issue and are threatening not voting for him.....
But that's comparable to many middle, working class and poor Republicans who vote against their interest of job growth and healthcare and push the far right and Tea Party agenda just to get a black man out of the Office....
*Soapbox*
Black people need to get our emotions in check, stop allowing Dems and the GOP alike to steer our voting agendas against our interest. Just because a black man or woman is homosexual DOES NOT mean they are no longer a member of our community. We are killing ourselves politically by publicly speaking against the President about an issue that effects the very people that exist in our families, churches and communities. This is about as juvenile an issue I've witnessed since my years on earth and we're willing the throw all that politcal capital right out the window over what people do in bedrooms....

Also, it's laughable to hear those who want to argue keeping religion out of this debate but return to religion when making arguments why gay marriage should illegal.
The reality is that we are not a direct democracy. We are a constitutional democracy. A constitution that is full of Christianity-guided prinicples written and influenced by people who fled England to practice the freedom of religious expression without persecution. With that said, isn't theocracy on some level, melded into the laws that rule this country anyway? If that's the case...meaning, if the Bible has some premise within the Constitution of the U.S., does the Bible-beating right and center-left have a point? Can they rightfully point to the Bible to argue against gay marriage?
I think so.....
