I took an Africana Studies class once and did very well...clearly I'm an expert on Africa now!! ETA: If you're looking for some legal debate complete with stats and sources then you may want to find a board or a group of people that are way more serious about this issue or gun rights in general. I know I just don't care that much about this issue to start looking up legal jargon and trying to find stats so we can have a debate. It's not even that serious to me. THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! This explains what happened to this discussion, Level. A certain poster decided to make this discussion very uninteresting with their jargon, stats, and figures, and tried (please noticed I said TRIED) to belittle because folks didn't feel the need to cite resources for their opinion and how they feel about the topic. There is always one Exhalt Bun! My goal was not to belittle. My goal was to debate and defend a position. I am used to other political boards where you MUST defend your assertions with objective facts. If that is not the norm of this board then I do sincerely apologize. Once one gets used to the rigid rules of other forums, it becomes very difficult to convert to a more relaxed board.

I don't think this was warranted. To bring up a politcally charged topic in an environment where people are likely to be knowledgeable and interested (i.e. inviting discussion of proposed Texas gun laws in the presence of a gun-toting Texas lawyer or the DREAM Act in the presence of an Immigration Attorney who is 1st Generation American, but I too, digress...) and then chastising the person for demonstrating their expertise seems silly to me. If you [aimed at no one in particular] weren't prepared to have an intelligent discussion on the subject, why bring it up? In fact, I'm not even sure why anyone would feel comfortable participating in a so-called "serious discussion" by means of anecdotes ad unsubstantiated opinions. Occasionally on this board, ya'll discuss things that I don't fully understand. Most times, I acknowledge that and choose not to participate. The times that I do chime in, I note "hey, this is simply my opinion, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents." Why? Because it's not anyone's job to dumb-down (regrettable choice of words, but ya'll know what I mean) their conversation to accomodate the fact that I don't find the topic to be "that serious."

If I state, it is my opinion, and then you want facts to support my opinion, then I will look at you like your crazy, period. That is my real issue.
Not a matter of dumbing down, but what is the point of talking in Latin to someone who isn't familiar with the language? Just because one doesn't speak Latin doesn't mean a conversation can't be had, just that a language that both are familiar with should be found to have that discussion. I think of it as culture awareness, or in this case, audience awareness.
It's not the fact that legal jargon, etc., was used. Its the fact that folks stated their opinion, and someone wanted others to cite references for their opinion when an opinion is just that, an opinion regardless if one finds it to be substantiated or not.
Same for this convo, a person can discuss a bill without having the knowledge of legal statues of a lawyer, and a poster should recognize their audience before taking on a tone of a discussion that the intended audience isn't familiar with, if the discussion is to be fruitful and informative. If not, it's pointless, especially if the only person who is understanding what is being said, is the person who is saying it. Lets just be real here.

*clears throat* Pardon me for my ignorance I was not aware Kyng was a "gun-toting Texas lawyer" or Leja was a "an Immigration Attorney who is 1st Generation American". I have slow girl moments at times LOL. It makes sense to me now their passion for the conversations. That 'tis all.

Ok Julie, I went back and I cant find where I was using any legal jargon. At this point, I may have it ingrained to the point that I cannot recognize it any more. Could you please point to an example. I am asking because I want to make sure that I do not do that anymore.

Sometimes, the introduction of anecdotes and personal opinions are quite valuable. In this conversation, for example, I value your anecdote very much as you are in education and spend a great deal of time on a college campus...and have access to day-to-day behaviors of students. Incidentally, I didn't see Kyng require (or request) that you provide sources for your opinion.

One case in point, and it may not even be legal jargon, but I'm just saying that as an example, is how you were throwing CHL around and another poster is like wait, what? What does that mean? That is just an example. That is like a special ed teacher coming in talking about IEPs and other technical terms that they are familiar with from their profression. My mom is a special ed teacher and I often have to say wait, Mom, what does that mean? She realizes that her daughter is not a special ed teacher and she explains. Once the understanding is given and she remembers that her audience isn't in the same profession as her and she is mindful of this, a conversation can be had.

In one of his postings, he said I provided facts to support my stance and show why it is valid, and you have not and I wish you would, or something to that effect, and that I was just going off of mer emotion. I could have easily hauled out my "heavier than thou" Legal Issues in Higher Education and given specifics _____ vs _________, and statue thus and so, but that's not really neccessary, especially on a forum such as this. If this is an legal issues form, ok, but here, nah. And just because a person chooses not to doesn't make what they are saying less valid. That is an issue I took with also.

I'm telling you, as soon as the university I work for allows it, I'm out of here. That is making an already crazy situation perilous.

.. And just because a person chooses not to doesn't make what they are saying less valid. I suppose not. But it does prevent the audience from perceiving the validity of what they are saying and thwarts the progress of the conversation. If the reason you didn't provide sources was because you simply didn't feel like it, cool. But if you say that up-front, then the other person realizes that it's a knife fight and doesn't bother to bring the big guns.

Can somebody please explain what TX was trying to do? I dont' feel like reading this entire thread.
AR just voted down a similar bill that allowed faculty and other personnel (not students) to concealed carry on campus and in campus buildings.

TX is getting ready to pass a bill, if it hasn't passed already, that will allow guns to be carried on college campuses.

I'm still not for guns on campus but I am pro-guns. My mom and I am taking a class to get my CHL this weekend.I definately need one for my relocation the city's rape case stats are high!
Plus, there's a huge difference between having a gun and using one.
And it's always better to have and not need, than to need and not have!
