Leja, youre partially correct hon but theres a few things you didnt capture. Lets say a Physician can make only 179k a year in the govt. Thats base salary only. A Physician also recieves, board-certified pay, MASP, MAST, Career incentive pay, Physicians specialty pay, etc. Trust me that a Physician makes quite a bit more than 179k in the Fed Govt. Ive been a Nurse in the Army for 23 years and I work right beside them. An Orthopedic Surgeons proficiency pay is 36k paid as a lump sum annually, by it self. That is pay thats given outside of the 179k in base salary. Its very easy for a guy in the right specialty to make 250-350K a year as a Physician, depending on his specialty and how long he signs a contract for. Granted, they can make more outside, but the govt is also covering their malpractice insurance, which can be pretty costly. They also get medical and dental bennies, as well as very good and cheap life insurance. Then you can factor in a decent retirement down the raod. When you look at all of this, they dont do too bad.

thanks for that insight! Do you think that 250-300k/year for a fedgov physician is wasteful? Do you think their salaries should be cut (in exchange for the medical/dental/life ins benes they receive)? Leja, youre partially correct hon but theres a few things you didnt capture.
